Pruner’s Workshop

Former board member Tom Shea will focus on the ornamental qualities of pruning shrubs and trees. He will introduce to you the tools needed to accomplish the task of shaping and directing the growth of plants in your garden, or home orchard. The workshop will primarily use the collections in the Cary garden plantings for a hands-on demonstration for assessing annual pruning needs and strategies for future pruning.

This program will be presented outside at the Hort Farm.

Tom Shea is a 5th generation Vermonter born in Montpelier and now living in Bristol. He is a raconteur: mountaineer, skier, writer, landscape gardener and manager of Gardener’s Supply retail nursery in Lebanon, NH. He earned an MFA in Sculpture from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He has attended numerous seminars on horticulture at the Arnold Arboretum and garden design at the Harvard School of Landscape Design. His first foray into pruning was in commercial apple orchards ranging from Vermont to Washington State to New Zealand.
