The General Ecology and Keeping of Carnivorous Plants
Have you ever wondered about those plants that eat insects? How they trap those insects? Biologist Lindsey Pett will highlight the major groups of carnivorous plants including North American Pitcher Plants, Tropical Pitcher Plants, Bladderworts, the Venus Flytrap, and Albany Pitcher Plant. She will dive into each group’s general ecology and discuss their carnivorous traits. She will also review proper care on watering, substrate, light, and dormancy. And she will bring some of the plants from her collection to show. The program will end with a Q& A on these mysterious plants.

Presenter’s bio: Researching plants has been a major part of Lindsey Pett’s life. Starting in forestry but transferring to aquatic and wetland plants at Paul Smith’s College, she worked as an aquatic plant survey technician for five years. Her survey of the Adirondack lakes led her to an interest in carnivorous aquatic and terrestrial plants and then to a master’s degree at SUNY Plattsburgh. She studied wetland plant functional group diversity impact on nutrient storage and aquatic/terrestrial invertebrate diversity. She has a PhD in the Biology Department at UVM. She is a member of the New England Carnivorous Plant Society and laboratory manager and researcher in the Earth and Environmental Sciences department at Norwich University.
